I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how boxed in the title “creator” feels. Our collective conversation around creators is limited to this very particular scope.
But taking the longview, I tend to think… everyone is a creator, or at the very least, can be.
Creators are just people who have the audacity to turn nothing into something.
And a few decades from now, we’ll live in a world run by creators. Maybe we already do. These creators won’t be exclusive to writers, TikTokers, and YouTubers, though they’ll be included. They’ll just be people out in the world doing things that don’t require gatekeepers or permission, and seek to find ways to make the world just a little bit better, a little bit brighter.
The creators of our future will be people who celebrate and adopt a creator mindset, but go by many different names —
Entrepreneurs are people that find opportunities in the current systems to crank up the heat or pour fuel on the fire. They see gaps other people don’t see — where you can turn 2 into 4, and 4 into 8.
Investors are meditators of the moment seeking out compounding returns. They work to see the world the way it is, and make bets based on probabilistic extensions of their worldview.
Hackers are people who question the rules obsessively. They could be drug dealers or mobsters, but the cool thing for them to do now is just code a site, build a bot, or scrape a bunch of data. They break things down so they can become better.
Coaches are people who get the best out of others on the path to a particular goal. They orchestrate strategies and call the plays. We typically call them “managers.”
Builders are people who turn ideas into reality. They lay the foundation and develop the infrastructure using the raw materials all around us.
Architects are people that see the big picture and develop new landscapes entirely. They change the way we interact with the world, and their visions touch nearly everything we do or will eventually do.
Gamers are people who understand the rules of this world, and see playing within them as fun, challenging, and rewarding.
Healers are people who see the pain of the world and choose to address it. They can be doctors, therapists, psychics, acupuncturists. You name it, they are on the edges of helping us realize our potential as humans.
Designers are people who see the chance to beautify or optimize the way that we do things as humans — digital and IRL. We think of them as the Photoshop mafia, but they are oh-so-much-more.
Educators are people who curate and design experiences for others to learn life through.
Creativity is the human capital currency of the 21st century. It comes in many packages, and under many names. But when I really break it down, it’s a mindset more than anything. It’s the audacity to create something out of nothing.
And if I know one thing is true, it’s this: those who lead with a creator mindset will lead the world.
Why not join them?
❤️,
Kate
